I love the red earth of some parts of South Devon. it lights up the winter landscape, especially with the sun on it. I also love trees in winter and field patterns – of crop stubble or plough. This print is in that spirit.
I made this print by drawing on to a piece of vinyl flooring, then using linocutting tools to cut around each part of the trees to leave them in relief. Next I used the same tools to cut out tiny crop stubble marks. The plate was printed with a blended roll of colour, from black/brown to orange/red. I then took a rough print, cut the sky out, inked the back of that piece of paper and placed it back on the print to give the subtle grey of the sky, which is also a blend from darker to lighter.
